![]() ![]() Important: The App Store will sometimes still show the price of the Mac version and you will need to confirm that you want to download. That means, if you already bought GoodNotes on one of your devices, you can install it for free on any other device where you're logged into the same Apple ID. GoodNotes 5 makes use of this option and offers the app as a single purchase across all iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices. Here’s the full post published on GoodNote’s website: Installing GoodNotes 5 for free on Mac Apple added macOS to the available platforms that support universal app purchases in March 2020. Note that GoodNotes 5 developers had to launch a new app to make this work as Apple doesn’t allow the merger of apps on the App Store. What this means is if you have purchased the iOS or iPadOS version of GoodNotes 5, now you can download the Mac version for free. And on the heels of Apple’s announcement, GoodNotes 5 has switched to universal purchase mode. That changed when Apple launched universal purchase options a few weeks back. The app is based on Apple’s project Catalyst framework that allows developers to use the same code-base for iPadOS and macOS apps.Īnd while the developers wanted to make the app free for Mac, they could not do so, as Apple did not provide a universal purchase option. A few months back, GoodNotes released GoodNotes 5 for Mac. Thanks to its incredible set of features and accessible design, the app tops the chart for iPad note-taking apps. ![]() GoodNotes was also among the first apps to utilize Catalyst, a new framework that makes it easier to port iPad apps to the Mac.GoodNotes is one of the most popular note-taking application for the iPad. Version 5, a big update that was released just over a year ago, included a new design, folder structure, improved search and more. ![]() GoodNotes continues to be among the most popular notetaking apps in the App Store. GoodNotes admits this isn’t ideal, but there is no existing way to migrate Mac-only GoodNotes customers or offer a discount. After that, the “Legacy Version” will be pulled entirely. GoodNotes is notifying customers of its Mac app about the change and is even leaving the “ Legacy Version” in the Mac App Store for a few days to make sure all customers are aware of the update. GoodNotes assures us, though, that only a tiny fraction of customers used the Mac app on its own, without the iPad/iPhone versions. Otherwise, you’ll need to purchase the macOS version a second time. However, if you only purchased the macOS app, it will continue working for you but won’t receive any software updates. That’s because if you have the mobile apps, it’s easy to delete your Mac app and re-download the new version at no cost. This only affects people who purchased the Mac version, but not the iPadOS/iOS versions. So to make a universal app, GoodNotes had to launch a new macOS version for users to download. GoodNotes said Apple hasn’t made it possible to merge existing versions of the app, meaning there’s no way to bundle the existing macOS app with its iOS/iPadOS counterparts. There’s a bit of a wrinkle in this process, however. The app costs $7.99 in the US app store for use across all three platforms. A new, universal version of GoodNotes 5 is rolling out today for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Fans of GoodNotes, the popular iPad notetaking app, is among the first to benefit from the change. The infrastructure to support universal apps has only been available for a couple of weeks, but some app developers are wasting no time linking their iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps as a single purchase. ![]()
